Child Health And Immunisation

By appointment only

Child health and immunisation clinics are run by the doctors, nurses and health visitors and all new babies are invited for regular check-ups from eight weeks old.

Ages of Immunisations are

8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 12 months, 3.5 years, 15 years.

Note that School Age children will have other vaccinations given by school nurses in addition to the vaccines at the surgery. You will be notified of these by the school.

Health Visitor Checks

Your newborn will be discharged from the midwife and passed onto the Health Visitor and they are a point of contact for Children from the ages of approx 1 month until 5 years. Parents can contact Health Visitors for advice and they will have a standard health check when the child reaches 2 years of age.

It is important that babies attend their 6 week check with the GP prior to having their first immunisations (between 6 and 8 weeks). This ensures that the baby is safe to complete their immunisation course.

New mums are also offered a post-natal check with the GP and this can be anything from 6-12 weeks postnatal.

Non-NHS Services

It is important to note that not all services are covered under the NHS Services e.g. completing of insurance reports, claims, statement of fact for outside agencies etc. If you are asking the doctors at the practice to complete forms then there may be a charge for this service – a list of the charges are available at reception.

When you bring the forms into the practice you will be contacted by a member of the team giving details of the charge for the service and you will need to pay for this before the work is completed. We do endeavour to complete the paperwork and have it back to you in no more than five working days after receipt of the payment.

Travel Vaccinations

Travelling abroad is becoming increasing popular and the variety of different adventurous type trips are also on the increase. This means that the risk assessment within your travel appointment with the practice nurse is now more complex.

A risk assessment needs to be carried out before deciding which vaccines are recommended and the advice that will best address your particular needs.

To help the process along you will be asked to complete a risk assessment form. One of the practice nurses will then review this form and you will be contacted to book an appointment.

Travel assessment forms should be completed and returned to the surgery at least 8 weeks prior to your date of travel to enable our Nurses to assess your vaccination requirements, order the necessary vaccinations and offer an appointment.

We will not be able to accept forms with 8 or less weeks to your travel date and you will be asked to make alternative arrangements with private travel clinics.

The surgery offers a variety of travel vaccinations, however there are some vaccines that we do not provide and you will be directed to a private travel clinic which can provide these for you.

There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below:

You should get information before you travel so that vaccinations can be planned, ideally no later than:

Holidays – at least 8 weeks before you travel
Backpackers and working abroad – 3-6 months before you travel

Your practice or surgery will need to know:

  • Departure and return dates
  • Countries visiting
  • Type of stay (holiday, backpack, occupational etc)
  • Allergies
  • Female patients – pregnant now or wanting to be
  • Vaccines you have had previously

There is a charge for most vaccines and not all may be available so you may be referred to other practices or specialist travel clinics for some vaccines.

Covid-19

Please note we are not able to advise on testing , vaccination or isolation requirements for your destination. This information is available at www.gov.uk/guidance/travel-abroad-from-england-during-coronavirus-covid-19. We suggest you check this regularly prior to your trip as the guidance can change.

If you require a covid pass for your destination this is available through the NHS app or the NHS Covid Pass Service.  These are not available from the surgery. Covid vaccines (if required) will also not be available at your appointment and should be accessed either through calling 119 or by speaking to reception to see if there are any available clinics at the surgery.

Further Travel Resources

Travelling in Europe

If you are travelling to Europe the EU has published useful information for travellers on the European website.

Musculoskeletal First Contact Practitioner (FCP)

Did you know we now have an FCP at our practice. An FCP is a Specialist Physiotherapist by background with considerable experience and expertise in identifying and managing musculoskeletal conditions.

This means that rather than you having to wait to see the doctor first with your bone, joint or muscle pain you can now have direct access to our Specialist Physiotherapist.

The FCP role will allow you to be seen by the right person at the right time for your condition so that you can achieve your desired outcome in less time.

You will be assessed and the appropriate treatment pathway will be decided upon via a telephone or face to face appointment.

The appointments are not for hands on treatment as such but the majority of musculoskeletal problems can be sorted out with advice and exercise prescription allowing you to self-manage and improve your symptoms.

If you require onward referral to specialist services or for clinical tests such as x-rays or bloods you can be referred directly by the FCP.

What we are seeing nationally in pilot studies is that after patients see an FCP, just 5% of patients choose to see a GP afterwards and 96% would recommend the service to friends and family.

If you feel you have bone, joint or muscle pain and want to see the FCP please speak to our reception staff.

Nurse Practitioner Service

Our Nurse Practitioners can assess and examine you, arrange investigations, make a diagnosis and provide advice and treatment including a prescription if required. They can make referrals to hospital doctors or other health care professionals, and admit patients into hospital when necessary.

They work closely with your GP and liaise frequently with her/him about your care. If necessary, you will be referred to a GP if the Nurse Practitioner is unable to deal with your problem.

Our Nurse Practitioners will be available for same day & pre-bookable routine appointments Monday – Friday
